After an awesome Sunday filled with homework, homework, and more homework, my family sat down to eat dinner, then carried out the tradition that we have held for as long as I can remember. My mom makes hot chocolate and we get to work decorating our Christmas tree while watching a Christmas movie. My brother begged to watch the movie Elf as we had done last year, so my dad put the dvd in and pressed play. As we watched the movie, with the help of my media knowledge, I noticed a piece of product placement done by the Coca Cola Company. while "Buddy the Elf" eats dinner with his new family in New York City, he begins to drink a full 2 liter bottle of Coca Cola. The whole family stares at him wide eyed as they have never seen any person drink so much soda in their lives. this creates emphasis on the product in the movie, and draws our attention to the product. As this is one of the most popular Christmas movies these days, the product placement proves to be a wise choice for the Coca Cola Company. After this scene comes the next which is completely filled with "Buddy" burping, a scene most popular for most of the young children I babysit! The timing of the product placement mixed with the comedic aspects of the scenes make for an awesome ad with great publicity for the Coca Cola Company.

  1. This is super interesting. The use of branding within movies and TV shows can be extremely subtle, yet effective. All of Buddy's eating habits are funny and memorable. Little kids everywhere watch this cute family movie every year at Christmas time and each time they are witnessing advertising in action. In the movie he uses Etch-a-Sketch and Legos to build a huge and elaborate model of NYC. After watching that scene a child would probably be more likely to add those things to their Christmas wish list.

  2. DUDE! I was just watching this and saw the same thing, and was going to write a blog about it! It's so crazy all of the product placement, there is really no way out of it huh.
